'School Street' could help social distancing
CARS are set to be banned from outside King’s Oak Academy at drop-off and pick-up times.
South Gloucestershire Council wants to introduce the “School Street” in Brook Road between 8.25 and 8.50 in the morning and 3 and 3.30 in the afternoon.
Only pedestrians and cyclists would be permitted in the street at those times, although there would be access for emergency vehicles.
The council is consulting on a proposed 18-month Experimental Traffic Order, which it would bring in from the start of the new academic year in September. Although this is a trial, the aim would be for it to become a permanent arrangement outside the all-age school.
School Streets is a national campaign that addresses other concerns affecting schools such as reducing traffic congestion, improve air quality, general road safety outside schools, as well as encouraging active travel to school and healthier lifestyles for families. The coronavirus outbreak has given it additional impetus, as it should make social distancing easier too.
