March 2021: Kingswood Memories
Kingswood District Council
This year marks the 25th anniversary of the abolition of both the former County of Avon and the Borough of Kingswood.
Kingswood District Council was formed on 1 April 1974 as a non-metropolitan district of the County of Avon, and included the areas of the former Kingswood and Mangotsfield Urban District and Warmley Rural District Councils.
The Council was based in the offices of the former Urban and Rural Councils for several years, until the building of the current Kingswood Civic Centre in the early 1980s. The photograph shows the Kingswood office (situated opposite the current Civic Centre) in December 1981.
Kingswood District was granted Borough status on 20th May 1987, and was merged with the neighbouring Northavon District to form the Unitary Authority of South Gloucestershire on 1 April 1996.
