Regenerating Kingswood High Street - Important Consultation closes on 7 June

Letter from Chris Skidmore MP

Dear Kingswood resident,

As your local Member of Parliament, I have long campaigned for Kingswood High Street and Shopping Centre, along with the derelict Whitfield Tabernacle Site, to be regenerated. I believe that we now have a real opportunity to seize the chance for new investment in Kingswood, thanks to the government’s recently created ‘Future High Streets Fund’.

In Westminster, I have held meetings with local government ministers already to demonstrate to them the huge potential that government investment in Kingswood could bring. South Gloucestershire Council are now putting together a bid into this new fund. Successful High Streets could secure between £5m – £25m and the council has been asked to submit its final proposals by the summer. Any extra funding would add to the £3million that Kingswood has received through the ‘Love our High Streets’ initiative funded by the West of England Mayor Tim Bowles.

South Gloucestershire Council is now inviting people to have their say on ambitious and exciting plans to revitalise Kingswood High Street. Plans are centred around Regent Street and the adjacent Whitfield Tabernacle, which has already received almost £700,000 from Mayor Bowles to stabilise the building and open it to members of the public. The council now wants to secure the additional funding needed to fully restore and transform the Tabernacle into a Performance Arts Centre and Cultural Cinema, while the neighbouring Masters Church is converted into new homes and the cemetery becomes a new park. Another aspect of the plans is to pedestrianise part of Regent Street between Park Road and Moravian Road.

The consultation is open until midnight on 7 June and I would urge you to have your say. You can do this by visiting www.southglos.gov.uk/FutureKingswood and complete the online survey. Alternatively, you can request a postal survey by calling our Consultation Team on 01454 868154.

I will endeavour to keep you updated through my local team, as more of the details are confirmed for these important Kingswood projects. For now, thank you for all of your support, which has been so key to the momentum that continues to build for unprecedented investment into our historic town.

With very best wishes,

Chris
