February 2021: Kingswood Memories
Blue Bowl, Hanham
The photograph of the Blue Bowl in High Street, Hanham, dates from the 1970’s (photo courtesy of the John Snell collection).
The Blue Bowl is reputed to be one of the oldest pubs in Britain. There is no conclusive evidence of its age, although St Lyte wrote that it was an old established hostelry in 1480.
There may have been a hostelry in the area from Roman times onwards. The Roman road from Bath to the port at Sea Mills (Portus Abonae) is nearby, and Roman coins and other artefacts have been found close by, some of which are on display in Kingswood Heritage Museum.
