February 2020: Kingswood Memories
The rank of shop premises opposite the King’s Arms pub in High Street used to include the local office of the National Union of Boot and Shoe Operatives.
Originally formed in 1873, the decline of the shoe trade in Britain led to amalgamation with other unions. The trade was very important in Kingswood: in the early part of the 20th century; there were some 110 boot and shoe manufacturers and wholesalers in the local area.
