December 2020 / January 2021: On the Treatment Table

January 26 2021

Is it really Christmas time already?

WELL, 2020 has been quite a year hasn’t it? I have just re-read the article I wrote for Kingswood Voice last Christmas, it's full of useful tips to prevent injury whilst wrapping your presents safely, being careful putting up your tree and decorations, and of course taking care in the dark, wet and icy weather, especially after a festive drink or two. Whilst the message is still
relevant today, it seems that we are in a different (COVID) world right now, Christmas included!

Since then, this year I have written about how our lives have changed, about PPE and clinical cleaning schedules, lockdowns, and how changes in work and leisure activity have created a whole new range of aches and pains that we have been able to help here at Action Potential.

Interestingly the British Chiropractic Association have recently conducted research on the effects of lockdown on the lifestyle habits and routines of 10000 people. This showed that 43% of us have worked from home since lockdown and that all age groups have found exercise the most difficult routine to stick to. Worryingly 57% of people are spending more time sitting than before lockdown and only a third of us have stuck to our wellbeing routines, this hasn’t been helped by the seasonal weather of course!

This certainly supports our day-to-day experiences in clinic and might help to explain the numbers of postural back pain related issues and over-enthusiastic DIY related strains and sprains we have treated since March.  The take home message for Christmas and New Year is look after yourselves, be mindful of your postures and remember to keep moving on a regular basis, but hopefully have some fun too with friends and family as allowed.

So, here’s wishing you a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year from all the team at Action Potential at Kingswood Health Centre and Hengrove Park Leisure Centre.

If you need any further advice on or treatment then the team at
Action Potential will be happy to help, even over the festive period!
