WILD Polio, the dreadful disease which particularly devastates the lives of children, has now been eradicated in Africa the World Health Organisation announced last month.

Kingswood Rotary Club  has been actively committed to the  worldwide campaign to eliminate polio since it was launched in the 1980s.  Rotary clubs across the world joined forces with the Gates Foundation  programme in 1987 on  the End Polio Now campaign.

Kingswood Rotary Club has run events and collection days to raise  funds and awareness in support of the vaccination and education programme. Readers may recall the Swimming Challenge at Kingswood sports centre and the grand Mile of Pennies fundraiser ending up at The Mall in Cribbs Causeway.

As an annual  springtime reminder, Kingswood Rotarians  planted  crocuses -  the emblem of the End Polio Now -  outside Kings Chase Shopping Centre and in Hanham.

There are still a few polio cases in just two countries in the world, Pakistan and Afghanistan, so the campaign continues  to ensure that this crippling and  killing disease is finally defeated.
