Big free party plan for Queen's Jubilee

April 08 2022

PLANS are under way to bring the Kingswood community together for the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee in June.

A funfair is booked for Kingswood park and a giant LCD screen will show the procession in central London on 5th June.

Everyone will be invited to bring a picnic to the park on the Sunday to watch the parade.

There will also be some free picnics distributed to people who usually use food banks, so that nobody is excluded from the event.

Camille James, Head of Kingswood Regeneration, said: “Most people are having things on the Friday or Saturday, so our plan is to have it on Sunday 5 June.

“I just think it’s a brilliant thing to try and get people out.

If people don’t want to watch the parade at home we’ll bring them out into the area.  I’m seeing how far funding will stretch. The funfair hopefully will be free: that’s my plan.

“I don’t want anyone to feel like they can’t come along because they haven’t got the money. I want kids to come and be able to go on a fair ride for free so parents don’t feel the pressure and everyone can just relax
for the day and have a bit of
fun.”

She said the application had been submitted to host the event, with a blanket event licence for 18 months covering Kings Chase car park, the High Street, Kingswood Park and Southey Park.

Ms James said: “We’ve got a meeting planned with lots of other groups to find out what everyone wants to do. We’ve had a couple of schools say they’d like to participate by doing singing, dancing and drama. The leisure centre also wants to do some activities.”

An extra bank holiday gives the UK a four-day weekend to celebrate the Platinum Jubilee from Thursday 2 June to Sunday 5 June.
